About Us - A Message from the Director

We started the Morning Star Elite Education Centre due to increasing numbers of street children and orphans and others from very poor families who were not attending school. Most of children are not getting an education due to the very high levels poverty in the Kangemi slum in western Nairobi. Up to 60 children are now regularly coming to classes in our school. All of this has happened in a period of only 5 months and every day more children turn up or are brought to us in need of assistance.

In addition to educating local children, we continue to run evening classes in English language and Kenyan culture for the Congolese refugee population living in Kangemi and its environs. Many of these vulnerable individuals have found themselves in Kenya unable to communicate effectively with locals due to the language barrier. There are now more than 20 Congolese who come to these classes daily and we are expecting many more starting from next year.

Our mission is to educate people within the slum, including local children, and vulnerable adults, including a sizeable number of Congolese refugees. We also run a feeding programme for the children, many of whom come from very poor families while others are orphans.

The number of children is ever increasing due to the quality of services provided by the Education Centre. More Congolese continue to attend our classes, hearing via word of mouth about the educational opportunities we provide which help them to better integrate and contribute to Kenyan society. Responses towards our educational interventions have been overwhelmingly positive and we have received great praise from the community. We are hoping to expand our programmes so that we can continue to provide an excellent quality of assistance, and also keep up with the ever-increasing demand. Our aim is to provide support to allow all those who come to us in need to receive a good education, be they children or adults; Kenyan or Congolese.

In order to so this, we need more support from well-wishers to maintain and begin to increase our capacity. We welcome all contributions whether they are purely financial or if you are able to donate educational materials, or support us by volunteering your time in assisting with our everyday activities.

Our main expenditure is currently rent for a very small room that we have transformed into our school. Our long-term goal is to have a permanent solution for the project which would involve the purchasing of a piece of land in order to construct a safe and positive educational environment for our service users.

Our projects are currently funded out of our own pockets, though this summer we received our first financial donations from an English family who had visited the area and were moved by the scale and effectiveness of what we have been able to provide with so little. We are in great need of any support that you are able to give us.

We thank you for visiting our site.
